Digital marketing professionals could be persuaded to use social media more and more in their campaigns after figures showed a nine per cent lift in the number of unique users on microblogging site Twitter.

The data, which was collected by comScore, found that since Google began integrating tweets into its real-time search results, the social media site had become even more popular.

Tim Gibbon, founder of social networks resource Social Media Portal, explained that the mainstream news organisations had been "hooked" by social media.

"Microblogging is just the beginning of sparking mainstream interest and its importance in this space should not be overlooked - it's not a fad," he said.

Mr Gibbon said companies could use sites such as Twitter to boost their business.

He commented: "We will see more web and mobile-related technologies work for brands if they are managed correctly."

Twitter has seen a huge rise in its popularity over the last 12 months.

In January 2009, the site had just four million unique users, compared to the 21.79 million it had at the beginning of this year.

That means there is a massive audience on the social media site that digital marketers can target their campaigns towards.ADNFCR-2033-ID-19627834-ADNFCR
